Cops investigate Pua over remarks on Rukun Negara, royal institution

Police investigation is underway against DAP veteran Tony Pua over his remarks on the royal institution and the Rukun Negara, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M Kumar said.

According to Kumar, the investigation followed 28 police reports lodged against the former DAP lawmaker nationwide.

Berita Harian reported him saying that the case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

When asked whether Pua would be called in to give his statement, Kumar reportedly said that all relevant parties are expected to be summoned soon to assist in the investigation.

“Of course, we will call all parties involved to assist in the investigation,” he said.

Contentious remarks?

Pua has been the target of a police report campaign after asserting that Malaysian monarchs are bound by the constitutional system and can’t issue binding decrees to legislate all aspects of people’s lives.

“I am loyal to king and country, will abide by the rule of law based on our supreme Constitution. Not decrees,” he said in one part of his Facebook posting.

The comment was made after Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah advised all state assemblypersons to visit the newly installed Rukun Negara monument plaque at Dataran Selangor twice a month to better understand and appreciate the national principles.

In particular, he suggested that Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Wong Siew Ki and former Selangor exco Ronnie Liu visit the site even more frequently to learn the importance of respecting the royal institution and upholding proper conduct.

In response to Pua, Amanah Youth exco Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda urged DAP to discipline the former Damansara MP and former political secretary to Lim Guan Eng, when the latter was finance minister.

“I am confident the remarks don’t reflect DAP’s official stance, especially under the leadership of (secretary-general) Anthony Loke and (deputy secretary-general) Steven Sim, what more since Pua is no longer a central leader,” he added.

Umno, Bersatu, and Putra leaders have also condemned Pua for his remarks.
